Below are answers to common questions about counselling, virtual sessions, privacy, and assessments. If your question is not listed, you are welcome to reach out.
How do I get started?
You can begin by booking an initial session through the website. The first appointment focuses on understanding your concerns, reviewing consent, and determining next steps.
What concerns do you work with?
I support adults experiencing trauma-related distress, anxiety, mood concerns, grief and loss, emotional dysregulation, relational stress, caregiver strain, and challenges related to life transitions or neurodivergence.
What therapeutic approaches do you use?
My work is integrative and trauma-informed, drawing from approaches such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), polyvagal-informed interventions, mindfulness-based strategies, and somatic regulation tools. Interventions are selected collaboratively and paced carefully.
Do you use mindfulness or body-based practices?
When appropriate and with your consent, mindfulness or body-based practices may be introduced as optional tools for regulation and awareness. These are offered in a clinical, secular manner and are not used if they may be destabilizing or contraindicated.
How do you ensure therapy is trauma-informed?
Trauma-informed care prioritizes safety, choice, collaboration, and pacing. We focus on stabilization, respect boundaries, monitor for overwhelm, and move at a pace that feels manageable for you.
Do you diagnose mental health conditions?
I can administer, review, and discuss mental health assessments for clinical and psychoeducational purposes. However, I do not provide formal psychiatric or psychological diagnoses. Formal diagnosis based on assessment results is reserved for licensed psychiatrists and psychologists.
Is therapy only talk-based?
No. While conversation is central, sessions may also include experiential, somatic, or skills-based interventions such as grounding exercises, nervous system regulation strategies, and parts-based work. All interventions are explained in advance and adjusted based on your comfort and feedback.
What if my needs change during therapy?
Therapy is reviewed and adjusted as circumstances evolve. Any changes in focus, goals, or approach are discussed collaboratively.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes. Secure virtual counselling is offered using Zoom, which adheres to applicable privacy and confidentiality standards. Telehealth sessions follow the same ethical and clinical guidelines as in-person work, with additional attention to privacy and safety planning.
Can my information be used for educational or website content?
Only with your explicit written consent. If consent is provided, all identifying information is removed or altered, and pseudonyms are used. Declining consent does not affect your access to services.
How is my privacy protected?
Confidentiality is governed by professional ethical standards and applicable privacy legislation. Information is not shared without your written consent, except where legally or ethically required (e.g., risk of serious harm).
